1971 - Design Space showcases the first institutional solo exhibition “GEO” of the Irish, Dubai-based Ceramicist Michael Rice. Addressing the materiality of the earth and experimenting with light for the first time, Michael Rice is exhibiting newly created works based on porcelain and emphasizing their translucency through light.

For this exhibition, Michael Rice has employed new techniques when working with various types of porcelain including Parian, Bone China and White Porcelain. By working with these new materials, the exhibition engages with key issues such as beauty, form, texture, harmony, symmetry, patterns, tessellation as well as the indivisibility of chaos and order, and, most importantly, how the balance of both is significant.

The exhibition includes a specifically commissioned work for the collection of 1971 – Design Space inspired by visiting the Archaeological Centre in Mleiha, located halfway between Sharjah and Fujairah. Nestled deep in the deserts of the Emirate, the objects exhibited at the Archaeological Centre originate from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, pre-Islamic, Islamic and modern ages, and give ample evidence about the international influence on pottery design, art and jewellery.

Another contributing factor to the development of the works for this exhibition was a visit of Michael Rice to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, in which a large percentage of the works on display are based on ceramics and form some of the oldest pieces on display. Rice was similarly captivated by the obvious beauty, skill, and craftsmanship of the works that also underline the importance of this humble material and its significance in expressing the values of civilizations.

Like many other countries in the region, the UAE has thriving craft traditions, particularly in terms of ceramics. Michael Rice is part of its re-emergence today, with a contemporary and modern approach that is showcased in this exhibition at 1971 – Design Space.
