Time: 09:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Venue: Main Events Area, Heart of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Zahed Sultan’s ‘Hiwar’ Project will conclude with a 60-minute live multimedia performance in the Heart of Sharjah’s heritage center. Archival material will serve as the foundation for this project. Complimented by contemporary and folk musicians, the performance will create a socio-musical / audio-visual dialogue or ‘hiwar’ that will draw linkages from the Arabian Gulf region.
Through interplay between video projections, electronic instruments, sound art and traditional percussions, pearl-diving music will be re-imagined in a progressive experience that will unfold in front of a live audience – celebrating rising multimedia art forms and messaging from the Arab world.
The ‘Hiwar’ project and final live performance took form during a three-week residency by Zahed Sultan in The Heart of Sharjah’s Theatrical Association. For his residency, Sultan converted a heritage housing structure and courtyard into a music recording studio and outdoor gathering space inpsired by the traditional Majlis. Through the course of the residency, Sultan hosted open studio sessions by day and live music gatherings (jams) by evening. The intention for this project was to explore the roots of pearl-diving music from the Arabian Gulf and discover musical bridges between traditions past and trends present.
