Sitaram Swain: The Trans-Indian Ocean Artists Exchange
Saturday 24 February, 2018
1:00 - 3:00 pm
Sitaram has spent the last four weeks in Sharjah as part of the Trans-Indian Ocean Artists Exchange with the Kochi Biennale Foundation, that was initiated by independent curator Mo Reda. Swain’s practice focuses on illustrations and installations to communicate concepts related to domestic objects that exemplify social issues. The work he has developed for this project is a series of pieces that are responding to the development of the city and his experience exploring Sharjah and the U.A.E. for the first time.
The act of looking becomes an implicit part of the fascination of imagery. Subverting the expected qualities of painterly rendering, Swain inverts an environment where each element adopts attributes opposite to their character. The fictional spaces of intentions expose the architecture of painterly illusion. The rich surfaces contrast geometric shapes of hand edged abstraction with highly rendered decorative details to create an eerie play between flatness and three dimensions. He uses everyday objects to discuss the fluctuating status of the urban landscape.
The project will be on view through 31 March, 2018.
