When: Saturday 11 Jul, 2015 12:00 AM - Sunday 26 Jul, 2015 12:00 AM.
Maraya Art Centre will support and co-commission the Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture exhibition titled ‘Echoes & Reverberations’ at London’s famed Hayward Gallery from 23 June to 16 August, 2015.
Shubbak, a new independent charity, was originally founded in 2011 by the Mayor of London, and is the UK capital’s largest biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture. Shubbak works with arts institutions throughout London and abroad and, in 2013, presented over 55 events at 42 venues with a turnout of over 50,000 people.
‘Echoes & Reverberations’ will showcase both new and existing work from six contemporary artists, all of whom examine the idea of sound and stories and the way they shape our recollection of past events.
This vibrant exhibition, which is free to view, will be held in the Hayward Gallery Project Space. The exhibition is a collaboration between Hayward Gallery, Maraya Art Centre, Delfina Foundation and Shubbak, and will launch the ‘Staging History’ initiative by Delfina Foundation. ‘Staging History’ has been developed to support research and new commissions of performance art from the Arab region and beyond.
‘Echoes & Reverberations’ is co-curated by Cliff Lauson, Curator of the Hayward Gallery and Aaron Cezar, Director of the Delfina Foundation. They were supported by Residency and Projects Manager of the Delfina Foundation, Jane Scarth, and Eimear Martin and Dominik Czechowski, Assistant Curators of the Hayward Gallery.
