Maraya Art Centre will be host to one of Qatar’s most influential artist as part of the 15th edition of the month long Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival. The exhibition, which will feature 37 artworks for the Artist Ali Hassan, including paintings and installations, is set to open in Maraya Art Gallery at 7pm on Thursday the 13th of December and will run until the 12th of January 2013.
Originally trained as a calligrapher, Ali’s art creates a synergy between traditional calligraphic forms of the Arabic language and contemporary use of colour, shape, and form. He is known for his enthusiasm for a diverse range of art styles, techniques and media and his use of everything from ceramics to collage does not follow a linear evolution from one period to the next; rather he always has a multitude of different of projects running simultaneously.
In addition to the main exhibition, French artist Jonathan Bréchignac’s ‘Prayer Carpets’ will also be on display in Maraya Art Gallery entrance. Drawn by hand on paper using only pencil and black ballpoint pen, each carpet is a full sized depiction of an Islamic Prayer Carpet and a testament to patience and dedication.
