"(Be) longing. Home, Place and Identity in the Works of Graduates from the College of Fine Arts and Design, University of Sharjah "
Returning again to Maraya Art Centre, works by five recently graduated students of the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) from the University of Sharjah are being showcased this year for the second time in Al Qasba, Sharjah.
Curated by Tor Seidel, Lecturer on Photography, and Shaikha Al Mazrou, Lecturer on Sculpture at Sharjah University, all works engage with the topic of (be)longing – addressing various issues of home, domesticity, place and identity which are particularly prevalent themes in the lives of these young talents that have recently graduated from the University of Sharjah and are now on their way to transition into their professional, artistic lives here and abroad.
The graduate students engage with various topics in their works – from re-creating domestic settings to exploring observations on the expat culture in the UAE, over to personal diary entries and playful reconstructions of childhood toys and household items, the exhibition questions what we take for granted as spaces and objects defining us in an everyday manner to those that have the potential to change our thinking of ourselves and the world entirely.
