Time: 09:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Venue: Al Noor Island Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
“The Swing” is a newly commissioned work by Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi which is located on the Western shore of Al Noor Island in Sharjah, UAE. Overlooking the water of Khalid Lagoon, “The Swing” invites visitors to sit on it and contemplate the island’s natural beauty.
Born out of the idea of reflecting the pre-oil era during the pearl harvesting season, in which women used to stand on the shores waiting for their husbands return in anxiety of losing their spouses, this work now offers a small public resting ground for families to sit together, spend time with each other and ultimately feel safe overlooking the prosperity and development of the UAE and Sharjah, specifically.
Created with materials like rusted mild steel and stainless steel echoing the aging of materials over time and highly characteristic of the artist’s practice, “The Swing” is shaped by seven abstract pieces that have ghaf and palm tree leaves cut into them. Under these patterns, the artist has placed stainless steel, allowing the surrounding trees and bushes to reflect in them. Special attention also has been given to the reflectiveness of light during daytime and nighttime – once the sun sets, “The Swing” is illuminated by lights embedded in the surrounding landscape and indirectly lit walkways leading to the piece, inviting visitors to discover this secretly hidden getaway on the island.
